Take down the books!  Who needs paperbacks when  you can read everything on your Kindle or Ipad? What can you decorate your bookshelves with that would be prettier than books and DVD’s?  Here are some inspiring ideas.

Decoarte bookshelves using a theme - from Vintage American Home
Decorate a bookcase with a variety of different objects but stick with a theme.

Here I used a combination of white ironstone, glass and silver.  I switched out some of my photo frames to inexpensive silver ones to keep with the theme.  The overall look is rather serene with a few pops of pastel blues and greens.

Using ironstone, silver and glass objects to decorate a bookcase instead of books. From Vintage American Home.
White silver and glass on a shelf

Actually none of these items is very expensive.  Many of the ironstone pieces are chipped and discolored.  Some of the items are new from Homegoods. The silver items are silver plate.  (Tarnished!)

Glass cloche on silver plate tray - shelf decorating from Vintage American Home.
This glass cloche used to be on a cheese dish that I got for a wedding present.

I think the trick is to use found objects and gather them in symmetrical and asymmetrical groups.  ie. sometimes centered and sometime in thirds.  Then use cake plates or upside down candle holders to elevate items for vertical differences.  I used this old lid to a cheese dish to cover a silver plate dish and put it all on a cake plate.  It looks like a real cloche.

Glass candlestick turned cake pedestal - ideas from Vintage American Home
Here is the candlestick right side up.

I take glass candlesticks and turn them upside down to use as mini pedestals and cake stands.  They elevate something simple and make it look more important.
