{"id":4535,"date":"2020-12-02T06:58:25","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T11:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/?p=4535"},"modified":"2021-02-06T09:14:56","modified_gmt":"2021-02-06T14:14:56","slug":"art-arranging-vignettes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/do-it-yourself\/art-arranging-vignettes\/","title":{"rendered":"The art of Arranging Vignettes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gathering beloved objects and collectibles together in artistic vignettes makes a house a home.\u00a0 Sometimes one can try to be decorative but feel like their placement efforts just look like a bunch of stuff stuck on a desk or table top.\u00a0 How do the professionals make everything look so attractive?\u00a0 How do they make things look like they were made to go together?\u00a0 Part of the answer is attitude.\u00a0 If you think it is supposed to look good you believe it does look good.\u00a0 Part of the secret is a few principles of placement and tricks of the trade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/consoletable.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4540\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/consoletable-300x238.jpg\" alt=\"consoletable\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/consoletable-300x238.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/consoletable-55x43.jpg 55w, http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/consoletable.jpg 395w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>This interesting display shows the importance of symmetry. There are a bunch of unusual articles on this table and under it.\u00a0 I mean there is a wire basket with an open book and a baseball in it.\u00a0 But the two large lanterns seem to anchor the whole kit and caboodle like bookends.\u00a0 They are what makes it work.\u00a0 Think two large lamps, urns, topiaries, or book ends to place on the outside edges of a vignette to make the inside stuff feel like it&#8217;s supposed to be there.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/on-books.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4545\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/on-books-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"on books\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/on-books-201x300.jpg 201w, http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/on-books-49x73.jpg 49w, http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/on-books.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>Here is another trick.\u00a0 elevate small collectibles by placing them on top of a pile of decorative books.\u00a0 Or use a candle base or other form of a pedestal to alter the height of your decorative items.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/vignette.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4554\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/vignette-266x300.jpg\" alt=\"vignette\" width=\"266\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/vignette-266x300.jpg 266w, http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/vignette-55x61.jpg 55w, http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/vignette.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is another trick.\u00a0 Gather all of your collectibles in one container.\u00a0 Here a bunch of spoons are stuck in vintage pottery.\u00a0 The spoons on their own would look loose and untended . Together your collectibles have more impact.\u00a0 Same goes for all of your silver spoons, eggs, apples, seashells, art glass, brass items, silver items, bronze items etc.\u00a0 Keep them all grouped in the same location for greater impact instead of spreading them out all over.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/tray-table.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4552\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/tray-table.jpg\" alt=\"tray table\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/tray-table.jpg 202w, http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/tray-table-49x73.jpg 49w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a>Here, a three tiered server gives lots of opportunity to display interesting items which will add a big decorative impact to a room.\u00a0 The basket and boxes on the bottom of the cart are attractive but also double as storage. The top display level can change on a seasonal basis.\u00a0 Notice how the use of cake pedestals help elevate some of the decorative items.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vintageamericanhome.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/secretarydesk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4548\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Well there isn&#8217;t much room to actually work at this desk but it is a decorative piece of eye candy.\u00a0 Notice how the arrangement is gathered into the rough shape of a rectangle?\u00a0 The straight edges help form an outline which makes all of the little pieces appear orderly and therefore meant to be there together.\u00a0 The use of similar colors also helps the pieces look more cohesive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4551\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4551\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a boxwood ball.\u00a0 There is also a symmetrical pattern in use.\u00a0 One tall item on the right two smaller items to the left.\u00a0 (Pile of books reads as one unit).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Effective home decorating really boils down to\u00a0 creating many smaller vignettes of artful arrangements of the items that you love to look at and things that provide warm memories of family, friends and
