A classic Old Sheffield Plate wine coaster with a clean, rounded form and a beaded edge along the rim. It measures 6.25" across and has a turned wooden base, as traditional examples do, designed to cradle and protect a bottle while on the table.
Old Sheffield Plate is one of the earliest forms of silver plating, developed in England in the mid-1700s. It was made by fusing a sheet of sterling silver to copper, then rolling and shaping it into finished pieces. Unlike later electroplating, this method creates a heavier, more substantial piece, and you will often see subtle signs of that construction at the edges or underside over time.
This coaster has a bright, reflective finish and presents well. There is light wear consistent with age, particularly to the underside, and the wood base shows expected surface variation. No major dents or structural issues.
A solid example of an early technique that is increasingly hard to find, especially in this classic, usable form.
